Mik Davis, communication studies and political science ‘20 from Hendersonville, Tennessee, strives to involve all student populations in innovation and entrepreneurship.

“The community is more well-rounded when we include different diverse populations of students.”

Davis recently received the opportunity to participate in the Stanford University Innovation Fellowship program. The program consisted of six weeks of online curriculum that teaches students about design thinking and different ways to network on campus, specifically in the realm of innovation.

“Once I finished that curriculum, I started working with the innovation and entrepreneurship committee (at Tech). That committee is involved with all kinds of different things like Eagle Works and Rural Reimagined. Basically, my work with that committee involves recruiting students from different populations to get involved in those activities.

“UIF and the innovation and entrepreneurship community are typically made up of STEM students or engineering/math students, so I wanted to try to get communication students, students in the college of arts and sciences and the college of interdisciplinary studies involved in this activity because I know that those diverse populations have a lot to add to the innovation and entrepreneurship community that’s already on campus.”

Davis is also the programs director for Tech’s radio station. She is also a member of 鶹ý’s debate team, where she was named national champion in March 2019 at the Pi Kappa Delta National Tournament.

“You can’t really be hurt by putting yourself out there. Being an undergrad is one of the greatest opportunities that you have to put your resume out there and just get involved in different things.”

After earning her degree at Tech, Davis hopes to attend graduate school, obtain a Ph.D. and teach and coach forensics on a collegiate level.
