Degree Programs
The School of Music offers Bachelor of Music degrees in Music Education and Performance,
as well as four Music Minors.
Bachelor of Music in Music Education
Students who wish to pursue a degree in music education can choose one of the following
programs: Vocal/General Music, K-12 Licensure; or Instrumental/General Music, K-12 Licensure.
These degree programs (which both lead to Tennessee Teacher Licensure) also require
admission to the Teacher Education Program in the College of Education.
The music education curriculum is designed for students who wish to become school band, choir, or orchestra directors. Classes in music history, music theory, pedagogy, and conducting are combined with private studio instruction and large ensemble performance opportunities. This degree (which leads to Tennessee Teacher Licensure) requires admission to the Teacher Education Program in the College of Education. Students can choose to focus in Vocal or Instrumental.
Bachelor of Music in Performance
Students wishing to pursue a degree in Performance can select from one of the following
programs: Composition, Instrumental, Jazz, Musical Theatre, Piano, or Vocal. Admission to the Performance option is by recommendation of the studio instructor.
The music performance curriculum is designed
for students who wish to perform professionally with orchestras, military bands, jazz
bands, opera companies, or in musical theater. This course of study also prepares
students to pursue graduate degrees at the master's and doctoral levels in preparation
for a university teaching career. Classes in music history, music theory, and advanced
private studio instruction are combined with extensive solo, chamber, and large ensemble
performance opportunities.

Bachelor of Science in Music
Students wishing to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in Music can select from one of the following programs:
The Bachelor of Science in Music curriculum is designed for students who wish to pursue careers in the field of music that may not fit the traditional models of music education or music performance.
This liberal arts style degree allows students to receive strong musical training while exploring other areas of study. Classes in music theory, private studio instruction, and ensemble performance are combined with non-music classes such as business, marketing, technology, and/or management.
This contemporary and wide-ranging interdisciplinary approach will prepare students
for numerous career paths in the music industry.
