Waitlist
Waitlisting Courses
The Waitlist option in Eagle Online (i.e., Self-Service Banner) allows students to self-select onto an automated waitlist for a course section during the registration process. The set-up for a course鈥檚 waitlist is maintained through the Office of the Registrar, is first-come, first served and fully automated, so students do not need to email, call or visit academic departments to get on the waitlist!
How Does It Work?
Once a class section has reached enrollment capacity as indicated with Eagle Online, any student that attempts to register using a CRN (Course Registration Number) for that closed section is prompted if they would like to be placed on a waiting list for that course section. If a student answers 鈥測es鈥, they are placed on the waitlist and that information is immediately visible in their student record (under Registration History and Student Schedule).
When an open seat becomes available in a section, the open seat is linked to the T number of the first eligible student on the waitlist. That student will receive an automatically generated email from Eagle Online to their 麻豆果冻传媒 email alerting them. Once a waitlist notification email is sent, students have exactly 24 hours to claim the open spot before they are dropped from the waitlist and the seat is offered to the next student on the list.
Tutorial on Using Waitlists in Eagle Online
Student FAQ
- 禄 How do I know which classes have the online waitlists?
Currently, all classes are using the waitlist. If a class is closed that is NOT on this list, you must contact the academic department for instructions on if you can still register for the course.
- 禄 How many students can be on the waitlist?
The current capacity for the waitlist has been set at 100 students.
- 禄 How are students prioritized on the waitlist?
Students are placed on the waitlist on a first-come, first-served basis 鈥 no exceptions.
- 禄 Where do I go to see how many other students are already on a waitlist before signing
up for a section?
The waitlist is visible in Eagle Online under 鈥淟ook Up Classes鈥 right next to the section鈥檚 capacity. You can see it when you鈥檙e searching for open sections.
- 禄 I鈥檓 looking at the course schedule and it says the section I want is closed (i.e.,
marked with a 鈥淐鈥 instead of a checkbox). How do I get on the waitlist for this section
if I can鈥檛 check the box?
If you want to get onto the waitlist, you must enter the section鈥檚 CRN (course registration number) into the Add Classes Worksheet located under the Add/Drop Classes link in Eagle Online. Select 鈥淩egister鈥 on the worksheet once you鈥檝e typed in the CRN(s) and Eagle Online will prompt you to join the waitlist since the class is closed.
- 禄 I tried to register for a closed class, but Eagle Online wouldn鈥檛 let me get onto
the waitlist. What do I do?
That means waitlist is not available on that course. You will need to contact the academic department for instructions on how to get into that closed section.
- 禄 I want to sign up for the waitlist for this course, but I don鈥檛 meet the requirements
(i.e., missing a prerequisite, must be an Honors student, Juniors/Seniors only, reserved
for certain majors, etc.). Even though I don鈥檛 meet the requirements, can I still
sign up for the waitlist 鈥 just in case some seats are available?
Even on the waitlist, all the same registration rules apply . So if a class requires that you have passed ENGL 1010 & 1020 to take it, or that you are a senior, or is reserved for Music majors only 鈥 if you don鈥檛 meet those criteria, you cannot register for the course OR sign up on the electronic waitlist. However, if you are given a permit from the department to override the requirement, like a prerequisite, you will be able to sign up for the waitlist.
- 禄 Where can I see my number (i.e., 鈥減lace in line鈥) on the waitlist?
You are instantly notified what number you have on the waitlist right after you sign up. You can also check your status 24/7 via Eagle Online on your Student Schedule to see if you鈥檝e moved on the list. No need to call or email departments!!
- 禄 How often is the waitlist updated as students move on & off of the list?
The system automatically will update students鈥 waitlist positions based on the registration activity that has occurred that day.
- 禄 Once I get an email from the waitlist about registering for a class, how long do I
have to claim the open seat?
Once a waitlist notification email is sent, students have exactly 24 hours to claim the open spot before they are dropped from the waitlist and the seat is offered to the next student on the list.
- 禄 I didn鈥檛 check my email and missed my registration window for the waitlist! Can I
get back on the top of the list?
Unfortunately, you can鈥檛. It is your responsibility to check your email regularly (even during the summer) if you know you are waiting for information about the waitlist. The status of your waitlist position is available 24/7 in Eagle Online. If you miss your 24 hour window to add a course, you are dropped from the waitlist, so you must add yourself back to the waitlist using Eagle Online. You will be at the bottom of the list.
- 禄 I don鈥檛 check my 麻豆果冻传媒 email. Can I have the notification sent to my personal
email account or can someone call (or text me) instead?
Waitlist will only notify you about registering for a course using your Tennessee Tech email; there are no other options. You can have your 麻豆果冻传媒 email forwarded to a personal account as an alternative.
- 禄 Both of these sections will work in my schedule. Can I sign up on the waitlist for
two sections of the same class to see which one I can get first?
Yes 鈥 you can sign up to be waitlisted on multiple sections of the same course.
- 禄 I signed up on a waitlist for a class with a lecture and a lab. I received an email
that told me I have a seat in the lecture, but not for the lab section that I requested.
Can I still keep my seat in the lecture or get permission to get into the lab I want?
Unfortunately, no. Even with the waitlist, you are required to add both the lecture and the lab at the same time to register for a linked course. If a seat opens up in the lecture but NOT in the lab you requested (or vice-versa), you WILL NOT be able to add the one without the other. If the lab you are waitlisted for does not open up within the 24 hour window you have to register for the lecture, you will lose your seat in the lecture. The best way to try to prevent this is to register for more than one lecture/lab combination to give yourself multiple chances to get into the class.
- 禄 I am registered for a class at one time, but there is another section that is closed
that is taught at a better time. Can I sign up on the waitlist for the section I really
want even though I鈥檓 already registered for a different section?
Yes, you can. However if you are enrolled in a course鈥檚 section and attempt to register for different section of the same course after being prompted by the waitlist, you will not be able to add the section you want without first dropping the section you are currently enrolled in.
- 禄 I am on the waitlist for a class but it shows one open seat available. Why do I have
to sign-up on the waitlist if there's an open seat? Can I register for that open seat?
Once a section closes and the waitlist is activated, any seats that open up for that section are assigned to the people on the waitlist. So when you see one open seat for a section that you are on the waitlist for, that seat is reserved for the first person in line on the waitlist. That person is the only one who can register for that open seat because it is linked to their T number, like a class permit.
Faculty/Staff FAQ

- 禄 How often is the waitlist updated as students move off of the list?
The system automatically will update students鈥 waitlist positions based on the registration activity that has occurred that day.
- 禄 Once a student receives an email about moving off of the waitlist, how long do they
have to claim the open seat?
Once a waitlist notification email is sent, students have exactly 24 hours to claim the open spot before they are dropped from the waitlist and the seat is offered to the next student on the list.
- 禄 I鈥檓 concerned about graduating seniors not getting the classes they need. Can I still
give out a CLOSED class permit on a section with a waitlist?
Yes. Our recommendation is to set the available seat count for the section at 3-4 seats lower than the maximum allowed in the room. During early registration, all students, even seniors, are still directed to use the waitlist. After the end of early registration after students are purged for non-payment, if a senior still has been unable to get a course the department chair can use her discretion to distribute permits for those 3-4 reserved seats. Permits would still be entered into Banner the same way.
- 禄 Can students see what position they hold on the waitlist?
Yes 鈥 students are instantly notified what position they are on the waitlist when they sign up. They also have the ability to check their status 24/7 via Eagle Online on their Student Schedule after signing up.
- 禄 Can students sign up to be waitlisted by checking the registration boxes available
under 鈥淟ook Up Classes鈥 in the Eagle Online Registration menu?
No 鈥 the only way students can be added to a waitlist is to enter that course鈥檚 CRN number into the Add Classes Worksheet in Eagle Online. If that section is closed and the waitlist is available, they will immediately be prompted. If the student searches for a course using Look Up Classes, closed sections will still have 鈥淐鈥 listed, even if they have the waitlist as an option.
- 禄 Can students sign up to be waitlisted for multiple sections of the same course?
Yes 鈥 students can sign up to be waitlisted on multiple sections of the same course. However if they are enrolled in a course鈥檚 section and attempt to register for different section of the same course after being prompted by the waitlist, they will not be able to do so without first dropping the section they are currently enrolled in.
- 禄 If a student is on the waitlist for two different sections of the same class, what
happens to the second option if the student is able to register for their first choice?
The student will remain on the waitlist until they manually remove themselves from the waitlist OR they are purged from the waitlist because they don鈥檛 register for the section when prompted by the waitlist. Removing your name from the waitlist is the exact same process as dropping a class using the Add Classes Worksheet in Eagle Online.
- 禄 Can a student get on a waitlist for a lab section of a science course if the lecture
section still has open seats?
No 鈥 for linked courses both the lecture and lab must be closed to get onto the waitlist. At that time, the student will be prompted to get on the waitlist for both the lecture and lab.
